Do you need a 4x4 in Iceland?
The answer depends on where you want to drive, when you are travelling and how much space you need. A 4x4 can be worth considering, but it does not make every road suitable or every journey safe.

A quick way to narrow your choice

Write down the roads you actually plan to use
A destination name alone may not be enough to choose a car. Include side trips, accommodation access and any mountain-road sections when you ask about vehicle suitability. Keep an alternative itinerary if access or conditions change.
For F-roads, different routes can require different vehicles. Do not assume every 4x4 is suitable, and do not treat a suggested route from a navigation app as permission to drive it. Off-road driving is prohibited.

Consider the season and conditions
Winter conditions can occur outside the winter months. Check the forecast and road conditions throughout your trip, not just before your flight. Slow down and change your plans when conditions call for it.
Four-wheel drive does not remove the need for appropriate tyres, careful driving and a realistic route. If you are unfamiliar with the expected conditions, ask for advice and leave more flexibility in your schedule.

Count bags as well as seats
A five-seat vehicle may not have room for five large suitcases. Think about the bags, child seats and other equipment your group will carry, and choose a gearbox you are comfortable driving.

What a 4x4 does not include automatically
The vehicle type alone does not establish insurance cover, permission for a route or camping equipment. Read the vehicle description and rental conditions together, and ask about river crossings before planning a route that includes them.
Our published rental terms exclude river-related water damage. Do not assume that choosing a larger vehicle or additional cover changes this restriction.

Is a 4x4 compulsory for every Iceland trip?
Your route and conditions determine what is appropriate. An itinerary on ordinary roads is a different choice from a Highland journey; check the roads you intend to use before booking.
Can I drive an F-road because I booked a 4x4?
Not automatically. Confirm the route with the rental team, choose a suitable vehicle and check road openings and conditions.
Does an SUV come with camping equipment?
